I'm running my first half marathon this coming May, and raising money for a charity called the Lords Taveners – a sports charity that works to give access to cricket to people with disabilities and from disadvantaged backgrounds.
I got into this via a cricket podcast listeners community I've been following since around 2019 – it's a proper parasocial network! A massive group of people, only a few of whom I've met in real life but that I feel very connected to.
Members of the community have been participating in the Edinburgh marathon and supporting the Taveners for a few years. Naturally they talk about this lots on their podcast, and as the planning for this year's race started to come around again I made up my mind to have a go.
I've been running regularly for my own fitness and enjoyment since my early thirties, but never gone further than about 17 km – so this will be my first time with this distance, and my first time training with a particular goal in mind.
